My Great I Am

, ,

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:13-14

As a Christian, this exchange between Moses and Yahweh is one I have been familiar with my entire life. I’ve always known God called Himself the Great I Am.

But I never truly understood what He meant until everything was stripped away.

When I was broke, He was my provision.

When I was lonely, He was my constant companion.

When I was scared, He was my security.

When I was being attacked, He was my defender.

When I was broken, He was my healer.

When I was sad, He was my joy.

When I was anxious, He was my peace.

There’s no end to who my Father was in my time of need. No matter what the need, He was.

But I can’t use that past tense. Yes, I can look back at His faithfulness in the midst of untold hurt and pain, but the key to my Great I Am is that He is exactly what I need exactly when I need it. Yes, He was faithful in the past, and He will always be faithful in the future. It’s who He is.

He is my provision when I am in need.

He is my constant companion when I am lonely.

He is my security when I am scared.

He is my defender when I am attacked.

He is my healer when I am broken.

He is my joy when I am sad.

He is my peace when I am anxious.

Although I change. Although my needs change. My Savior is always consistent, always here, always what I need exactly when I need it. He was and He is and He always will be. He’s is the Great I Am, The Alpha and Omega, the One who has no beginning and no end.

He is the Great I Am.

As we approach the celebration of our Savior’s death and resurrection, we must remember that Jesus was also our I Am. He said,

I am the Bread of Life.

I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

I am the Light of the World.

I am the Good Shepherd.

I am the Door.

I am the Resurrection and the Life.

I am the Vine.

Again, Jesus emphasizes His present quality, His desire to be exactly what we need exactly when we need it. Let’s not forget our Great I Am as we enter the Holy Week celebrating our everything.

Synopsis:

“Jesus: His Life” explores the story of Jesus Christ through a unique lens: the people in his life who were closest to him. Each of the eight chapters is told from the perspective of different biblical figures, all of whom played a pivotal role in Jesus’ life including Joseph, John the Baptist, Mary Mother of Jesus, Caiaphas, Judas Iscariot, Pontius Pilate, Mary Magdalene and Peter.

Each figure takes a turn guiding viewers through the emotional and epic story of the most famous man in history, through his birth, death and resurrection, all conveyed through a combination of scripted drama and interviews with prominent religious and historical experts. Utilizing some of the world’s most respected Biblical scholars, historians, faith leaders and theologians, the series weaves together the canonical Gospels, historical sources and cultural context to create a complete portrait of Jesus – the man and the Messiah.  The series finale airs this Monday, April 15 on The History Channel at 8pm ET/PT.

I just came across (God thing ??) your blog and have spent the last hour reading and wishing we could meet for coffee! Your story is eerily the same as mine. An ex husband in ministry that had an affair and chose to live out that affair. I have 3 kids and fought with every part of me to redeem my marriage. He wasn’t interested. The lies that were spread at church, the outright hatred and rejection from his family, the blame, the lies and distortion of truth he maintained…so much brokenness. It’s been 2 years since my world changed and almost a year divorced. Never imagined my life this way but I desperately cling to the truth that God is good. The incredible blessings I’ve experienced along the way, the support of family and my new church and the little pieces of manna I think you called it, I’m so thankful for. God provided me with full custody of my kids and I moved across country to be near a support system hoping he would repent and be with his kids. Instead, I get more lies, blame, and guilt heaped on me. But I know my kids are safe and at a place where God’s truth can be evident in every area. I fear for them as they see the life their dad is living, that is so contrary to what he used to teach, and know ultimately they have to decide for themselves who to serve. Praying He can use me to teach love, forgiveness, and Truth to my kids. Our family motto has been to choose Joy and my kids are thriving! Thank you Lord! What a journey. A lonely, tiring, exhausting journey that makes me cry “come quickly, Lord Jesus.” Thanks for being an encouragement and blessing with your words. So encouraged to know I’m not crazy, I’m not at fault in his pursuit of an affair, and I did the right things to protect my kids from his lifestyle. So thank you for your ministry! God bless!
